    Why It Is Not the Genetic Test That Counts, but the Explanation Behind It

    A new study from the EU iHelp project shows what really makes people change their lifestyle. And it is not what most would expect.

    The question many people ask

    Genetic tests have long since arrived in everyday life. Send in a saliva sample, wait a few weeks, receive a report with risk values for this and that. For many, that sounds like the obvious first step towards prevention. Yet a recent study from the EU-funded iHelp project suggests that this very first step may be the wrong one, at least when it comes to real behaviour change.

    What the study shows

    The team led by Kelly Muir sent a personal report to 178 adults via the British health organisation Graham Fulford Charitable Trust. It contained not primarily fixed genetic risk values, but the so-called epigenetic age, along with a polygenic cancer risk score and lifestyle data from wearables. The decisive difference to a classic genetic test: epigenetic age does not describe fixed heredity, but how the body currently responds to lifestyle, environment and time. It can change, for better or worse.

    91 of the original participants completed a questionnaire after one year. The result was clear. 72.5 percent said they felt healthier, 60.4 percent moved more, 47.3 percent ate more consciously. Health literacy and mental wellbeing also increased. What is remarkable is less the individual figure than the common denominator behind it. From fourteen different epigenetic clocks, the team deliberately chose the model that can be communicated most understandably to laypeople, instead of simply naming a risk.

    It should still be put into honest perspective. There was no control group without biomarker feedback, the data is self-reported, and only around half of the original 178 participants responded after a year at all. That can skew the numbers optimistically. So this is not proof that a clearly explained result caused the change. But it is a strong indication.

    What this means for everyday life

    The obvious conclusion is not to hastily order a test now. It is rather: if numbers about your own body are meant to move something, they need context, not just a results sheet. Anyone who wants to know how their health stands apparently benefits less from a static genetic finding than from a value that can be changed, explained clearly and placed in the context of their own life. That can be biological age, a blood panel, a fitness check – what matters is the explanation afterwards.
